  1. My quest for a way to generate images with text using custom fonts with ASP.NET

    Posted June 09 2010. 4 comments. I was asked today to look into creating an ASP.NET HTTP handler that on the fly creates images with text in a specific font. It had to be able to create images with transparent backgrounds, creating text with both TrueType and OpenType fonts and it had to support word wrapping when the text didn’t fit in a specified width.

One of the hardest things to (unit) test when using ASP.NET Web Forms has traditionally been redirects as they are performed on the Http Context. When we use Web Forms MVP, which uses the HttpContextBase class, we can, with the help of test doubles quite easily test redirects. In this tutorial I show two ways to implement a unit test for a presenter method that performs a redirect when a condition has been met.

As I was building this site using ASP.NET MVC I decided to seek another solution where the sitemap was generated by a controller. The solution turned out to be a custom ActionResult class, XmlSitemapResult.

I just had a conversation with my friend and former colleague Rickard (@VirUZI) where he informed me that a hotfix has been released for EPiServer Community that fixes a bug we’ve both run into. I said thanks but also that I already knew thanks to Twitter. Rickard then asked me if I had any tips about people at EPiServer to follow on Twitter. I compiled a list of the people at EPi that I follow. I also gave him a list of other people I thought he should follow.

  6. EPiServer and MVC – Retrieving current page using a custom model binder

    Posted August 04 2009. 0 comments. In a previous post I described my first attempt at working with EPiServer and MVC along with Page Type Builder. In that I let all controllers inherit from a base class to retrieve the cuurrent PageData object. A much cleaner solution, which makes the controllers highly testable, is to let each action method have a currentPage parameter of type PageData (or in my case BasePageData). This is easily done by creating a custom model binder.

  8. Handling multiple ASP.NET configuration files with build events

    Posted July 15 2009. 3 comments. In the ASP.NET project that I’m currently working on most of the developers are using IIS 7 while a few is using IIS 5.1. This meant that we needed to have two separate web.config files. We wanted a solution to this that would be as simple as possible and came up with one using build events in Visual Studio and a Powershell script. The solution also works for other project types than ASP.NET of course.
